The american architect Louis Kahn once said ' the sun never knew how wonderful it was until it fell on the wall of a building'. l wonder if he was thinking of New York, where walls extend forever upward and across, where sky, carved by those walls into slivers and triangles of blue, presses down to the streets, and where in winter, when the days get shorter, the geometry of the city continually shifts in light and shadow ( Lance Esplund, Modern Painters).
